5 Garage security tips

Garage security is home security.

At Hudson Valley Overhead Doors & Operators, we know very well how safe and secure our doors are. Once you close your overhead garage door the bad guys are pretty more locked out of your house. Nevertheless, there are always unscrupulous people who would stop at nothing and still try to break into your home using your garage door no matter how secure this one is.

  1. Garage door openers have emergency releases that disconnect the doors from their openers; this allows the door to open manually. Not all garage doors are easy to open manually but some delinquents have managed to come up with “fishing” techniques, they usually push the door and put a wedge that allows them to insert a wired hook through the little gap and release the door. In order to avoid this choose a garage door with a vertical release that can only be opened from the inside with a perfectly vertical move and not at an angle.

  1. Another important thing to keep in mind is that you should always make sure your door is properly closed. Many times, burglars are able to get into homes because a door has been left open by accident. If you install a garage door sensor it will send you a signal to let you know if the door is closed or open, so you can make sure to lock it properly.

  1. Never leave your garage opener in your car. It is fairly easy for burglar these days to break into your car, they might not be able to steal your car, but they can surely break into it and steal whatever is inside. So, instead of keeping your opener in your visor, keep it in your keychain and carry it with you at all times.

  1. If you are going on a vacation and the garage won’t be in use during your time away you could physically lock your garage door by unplugging the opener, but even better, you could add a padlock above the rollers of your garage door so even if a thief tries to fish your overhead door they won’t be able to open it because the door itself will be locked.

  1. Last but not least, a few extra security measures you should consider are for example adding bright lights and move sensors to the outside of your garage. Also, the door that connects your garage to your home should be heavy duty and with a deadbolt, as all your other exterior houses. If your garage door has windows make sure to cover them so burglars cannot see through them, and if you are leaving for a rather long period of time, male sure to leave all curtains closed.
