One of the major failures you may come across with garage doors is the wearing out of pulleys.  Not an uncommon problem for doors that have been around for quite some time.  If your garage door is over 10 years old you might want to consider contacting Hudson Valley garage door and their Lagrange garage doors services.  This maintenance check helps in prolonging your garage doors life.  When pulleys wear out there is usually one culprit.  A garage doors ball bearing usually breaks down, causing the pulley to scrape against the track angle.  Another cause may be the failing of the rivets causing the pulley to split which causes the door cable to stick.

So how do you know when your pulleys aren’t working properly? Very simple, your garage door will start to open part way and then stop.  This is a sure sign that something is wrong with your pulleys.  For the most part when pulleys fail garage doors do not open and close properly.  The door starts to bind and stick.  This binding and sticking is usually accompanied by an awful scraping sound.

To rectify the problem simply change out your pulley.  First step is to

  1. Unplug the power cord to your garage door opener or turn off the fuse which is connected to your garage door
  2. Disengage the opener from the door
  3. Open the garage door to open the door you will probably need to move to side with the worn pulley.  Lift the door making sure you are careful that the top section does not catch on the broken pulley.
  4. Once open wedge it open making sure it is securely open.
  5. Remove cable clip from the s-hook and remove cable from the pulley
  6. Loosen nut and bolt that holds broken pulley
  7. Replace broken pulley with new pulley ensuring you tighten the bolt properly (repeat this process for all broken pulleys in system
  8.  Once you replace al pulleys run cables through all the tracks.
