Now when you first open that garage door after a long winter of hoarding away things you might feel overwhelmed. No worries.  First thing you should do is

Assess the Mess:

When taking on this task try to pick a nice sunny day, start in the early morning if you can.  The last thing you want is that afternoon sun beaming down on you. Start by pulling things out of your garage and start taking down an inventory of what you have.  Once you have your inventory down you will see what you do not need or what you may have duplicates of, this is the perfect time to start setting some items aside for a yard sale.

Don’t be a pack rat! Throw things out:

This may seem very difficult for some but it may be necessary.  Think about it, do you really need that crusted can of paint with only half an inch of paint in it?  NO!  Then get rid of it.  When getting rid of items make a few separate piles.  One for toxic items, one for recyclable items, one for car batteries and old engine parts.  Make sure all these items are disposed of properly

Redesign your storage space:

Now is the time to decide how you always wanted to lay out your garage space.  Start visualizing where things will be going.  Maybe now is the time to add some shelving for those smaller items.  Or putting in a crate for those bigger items such as ladders.  If you’re a do it yourself kind of guy you may even consider putting in a work bench.

Spruce up the place:

Adding a new coat of paint to those walls may not hurt.  Treat the floor as well with an epoxy coating.   Try hanging up pegboards for all those small tools and metal reels for hoses and cords.

Start labeling you items:

So you won’t be in this same mess next year try labeling your items with some markers or maybe setting up tape in different areas where you will be storing specific items.  This will help make your life a whole lot easier come next spring.
