Why Is My Garage Door Not Opening/Closing?

Sometimes it’s the simple luxuries of life that can make or break your day. Take, for example, an automatic garage door. It’s hailing outside, you’re sitting in your car, dry and warm. You could’ve stayed in your car until it was parked inside your garage where it is also dry and warm if only you had a functioning remote controlled garage door. What’s more, is that you once enjoyed this luxury, and for some reason all of a sudden the door has ceased to cooperate. This article will give you an explanation and a solution to all of your non-functioning automatic garage door problems, so that you can properly address them and go back to living easy again.

First step, check the track. If your door is only closing partially then the track is probably warped. Most doors have sensors, which will flicker when the track is warped. If this is the case, the first step is to grab a ladder and tighten the wires, which in turn should then realign the sensors.

If the sensors keep blinking, next you should brush the track down of any leaves, dust, or grease, especially in the cold whether since the low temperatures cause grease to expand, effectively misaligning the track.

Once you’ve cleaned out the track, be sure to add some lubrication, but make sure you’re picky with which lubricant you use. The best material for garage tracks is lithium grease.

Then see if you can locate exactly where the track is warped and try to gently hammer it back into place. If it’s too far gone, you may have to get it replaced. But best-case scenario the whole problem can be remedied with a few light taps from a blunt object.

If the problem persists, you’re probably dealing with something a bit more technical in which case you may have to call a professional.
