Home Garages aren’t just for cars anymore. I find it unsettling when I visit friends and find piles upon piles of junk inside of a Home garage but no car! Even with the average household in the United States owning 2.3 cars there are still many unutilized home garages. As my friends would say “home garages are like personal storage containers for all your unnecessary items”. With a little bit of work you can transform that unholy mess into a place of sanctuary that you and your family can enjoy.

1) Gym. With gym memberships going through the roof these days it’s a no brainer bringing that cardio goodness to your home. Most home exercise routines fail for the simple fact of repetitive boredom. Let’s face it, we are not hamsters, we are not entertained by the idea of running on a treadmill every day. A garage allows you freedom. Mix it up a bit! Bring in some weights, bike, tread mill or go all commando and go the route of a boot camp gym where minimal investment in equipment gives you great results.
2) Home Theater. This spells big time fun for the whole family. If going this route with your garage you want to make sure to do proper insulation. Make sure to keep out as much natural light as possible. Nothing can be better than coming home to your own personal theater. Throw in some comfy couches and your all set.
3) Workshop. Now this might work in your favor or against. I have a few friends who have had some marital spats over this. It all starts off fine “oh honey I’ll be able to fix anything if I had a workshop in the garage”. Usually ends up being a clubhouse for a bunch of beer drinking adult males. Just make sure to get to those household chores guys and you should be fine.
4) Guest Room. Now this is an idea that should keep the peace in your home. This will surely help out when you have visitors. Just like the home theater, insulation is the key. The last thing you want is for your guest to be cold at night. When it comes to décor try to stick with what is inside your home. Simple Track lighting can be installed which can connect through your already existing fixtures. For ease instead of adding a closet you can add a dresser. Just keep it simple, remember if you make it to nice your guest might turn into permanent occupants. J
5) Game Room. This would have to be my personal favorite. Sports/table games/home bar all wrapped into one! How can you go wrong? Yes there are some big ticket items like a pool table or foosball table that is needed to make any game room complete but once you add in the amount of cash you will save by staying in instead of watching the big game at the bar you’ll get all geared up to build your game room.
These are all great alternatives to a home garage. If you do decide to convert your garage into one of these stylus room remember that security is of the utmost importance.
