What to Consider Before Choosing Your Automatic Garage Door Opener

Manual garage door openers are in the past.  In recent years, more and more people are switching to automatic garage door openers, and for good reason.  These openers not only make your life easier, but they allow you to open your Clermont garage door from anywhere in the world and improve the safety of your home.  That’s why when you install a new garage door, or when you update your old garage opener, you should consider an automatic opener.  Before you purchase the first one that you see, however, there are some things you should know about them.

You Need to Consider How Much Power Your Opener Needs

If your garage door doesn’t have enough power, then it won’t be able to lift the door.  Since some doors are heavier than others, you have to consider the material that your garage door is made out of.  For instance, aluminum and fiberglass doors are usually lighter than wood and heavily insulated doors.

You May Need an Extension Kit For Taller Doors

Most manufacturers design their openers to work with doors up to 7 feet tall.  That being said, if your door is taller than this, there’s a good chance that you’ll need an extension kit.  This extension extends to the overhead rail on which the garage door trolley slides.  This allows the opener to accommodate taller doors, and they usually include a longer chain or belt, although it’s not always necessary.

There Are Different Types of Openers to Choose From

Garage door openers come in 3 varieties, so it’s recommended to know the difference so that you can choose the opener that fits your needs.  The three varieties are: chain-driven garage door openers, belt-driven garage door openers, and screw-driven garage door openers.  In our next article, Different Types of Garage Door Openers, we’ll discuss the difference between these types of openers.
