Broken Garage Door Springs: What You Need to Know

If your garage door isn’t working as well as it used to, there could be different reasons as to why.  One of the reasons why this could be happening is due to the garage door springs, which are one of the most important parts of the garage.  These springs work to make lifting and lowering the door easy; if they’re broken, it could be dangerous for anyone that’s around the door.  Here’s what you need to know about these springs.

There are Different Types of Garage Door Springs

There are two main types of garage door springs: extension springs and torsion springs.  The most popular type of springs are the torsion springs.  These springs use torque to complete its function, which is a twisting force that causes rotation.  Extension springs, on the other hand, are found in the upper, horizontal tracks on each side of the Somers garage door.  In order to open the door, these springs are extended, creating a counterbalance that supports the door.

How to know if Your Springs Are Broken

The most obvious sign to look for is if your garage door is struggling to open, or won’t open at all.  It may also lift about 3 inches off the ground and then go back to the ground.  That being said, you may have a damaged spring, but your garage door could still be opening and closing fully, which is very dangerous.  Signs that you can watch out for are loud pop sounds or loose garage door cables.

What to Do When This Happens

If you think your garage door springs are broken, you should get them replaced as soon as possible.  Since not all broken springs are as noticeable as others, this is also why it’s important to get your Somers garage door inspected regularly, or anytime you notice any irregularities.  For help replacing your garage door springs, call us at Hudson Valley Overhead Doors & Operators.
