Garage Door Safety Features and How to Test Them

Garage doors have come a long way in the last few decades.  Accidents have lowered significantly due to many safety features that have been added.  Although these features exist it is always a good idea to check these safety features yearly.  Below are some of the features to test and keep in mind year in and year out.  When choosing a testing day try to use a date that is easy to remember such as someone’s birthday or a holiday.  A good time to check is during day light savings.

Obstruction Sensor:

One of the most important safety features is the obstruction sensor.  You can think of this feature as an electric eye capturing every movement going on in its direct line of sight.  The obstruction sensor is mounted about six inched off the ground on both sides of the door.  It shoots out a beam of light from one of the sensors and is read by the other sensor.  If this beam of light is broken at any point this triggers a reaction in which the door will automatically open.  To test this feature place some type of obstruction between the sensors and then try to close the door, the door should not move or move a little and then stop.  If the door continues to close unplug the garage door immediately and have the professionals at Hudson Valley Overhead Doors and operators come to service it.

Garage Door Balance:

The door balancer basically keeps the door in place when disconnected from the drive system.  When the door is disconnected from the drive system it should open and close smoothly.  For testing move the door around and let go in different positions.  If the door stays fit then you’re good to go but if it doesn’t stay still you should contact Hudson valley Overhead Doors and Operators for servicing right away.

Automatic Reversal System:

This system is set in place to reverse the door in any direction when it encounters excessive resistance.  First you’re going to want to test the door with some type of obstacle once it meets this obstacle it should reverse itself.  You should also test the door by leaning up against the door on the outside while it is descending and ascending.  This should cause the door to move in the opposite direction.
