Garage Doors: Past and Present

Carriage house garage doors have become a popular door option over the past years. They provide us with safety and comfort but also help to keep your property looking aesthetically pleasing. Carriage house doors have been around for centuries and were the precursors to the actual garage and the garage door itself. The history of the garage door dates back thousands of years and in different locations all over the world.

Way back when the wheel was invented, there were many devices and methods of transportation created (the wheel is estimated to have been invented by the Mesopotamians in 3500 B.C) and as civilizations grew, so did the need to transport goods from point A to point B. If garages were invented for the sole purpose of storing early ancestors of vehicles then garages have been around for thousands of years.

Innovation has seen both the wheel and ancestors of a garage grow into what we see today. When the carriage was invented, owners saw themselves with the problem of having a place to store it to avoid having unwanted visitors or burglars (these have been around for longer than the wheel) take their goods and quite possibly the carriages as well. In western culture carriage house doors featured strap hinges that would help swing doors open which made it easier for carriage owners to have access to their carriages.

The process of storing a carriage or any vehicle that came after was called ‘gaer’ which is a French verb for cover. The word ‘garage’ is taken from this French verb. Now, history isn’t always accurate but the word garage wasn’t utilized until the early 20th century.

A breakthrough was made in the roaring 20s when a man by the name of C.G Johnson invented the sectional door that came to be what we see as today as a garage door.

We have come a long way from the Mesopotamians but we still use a lot of their methods. Storing our property and keeping it safe is just as necessary now as it was 3000 years ago and is the main reason why innovation is so important. Burglars always find their way around technology and manage to use it for evil instead of good.
