How to coat your garage floor with epoxy paint

Tired of your boring, dull garage? Feel sick of driving into a lifeless garage every day? By applying epoxy floor paint to your garage, you can turn your lifeless garage into a lively place you can enjoy driving into and spending time in.

An epoxy coating will not only leave your garage looking bright with beautiful colors, but resists oil, grease and other substances regular paint wouldn’t be able to resist. It is also very easy to clean.

However, if not installed correctly, epoxy coating can chip and peel just like ordinary paint.  That is why it is critical to prepare your garage floor to properly install an epoxy coating. The following are basic steps to follow when installing an epoxy garage floor coating.

Preparing your garage floor

Use a scrub brush and a degreaser to any oil stains. You’ll need to aggressively scrub until all oil stains are completely gone and water no longer beads on the surface. Next, wet your garage floor with a hose and use an electric floor scrubber while pouring degreaser on the floor. Finally, vacuum the floor and make sure it is completely dry.

Etch the concrete

First, wet your entire driveway with a hose and then apply a commercial concrete etcher. After applying the concrete etcher, do not let the surface dry without rinsing it out. Thoroughly rinse your garage floor with a hose or pressure washer two or three times until the concrete floor feels like fine-grit sandpaper. For faster drying, squeegee out any remaining water and dry wet areas with a rag. Leave your garage floor to dry overnight.

Patch cracks and chipped areas

After your garage floor has completely dried, fill any cracks, holes, or chipped areas with epoxy crack filler then scrape the surface smooth. Let it dry a few hours before applying epoxy coating.

Applying epoxy coating

Mix the two epoxy chemicals together for 5 minutes using a drill and stirring bit to ensure thorough blending. Then, tape the area under the garage door with duct tape and brush on a 4 inch strip of epoxy along the walls and tape. Finally, use an extended roller to apply the epoxy paint.

Let it dry

The epoxy paint will dry overnight but will take from 3 to 7 days to fully cure. Refer to the epoxy label instructions to be sure.
