With old man winter right upon us we here at Hudson Valley Overhead Doors and Operators have decided to write an informative little piece for our loyal customers providing them with tips on how to maintain a driveway clear of snow this season.
Every year numerous accidents happen to people who are not shoveling snow the proper way. Follow these tips to better your chances of being safe this season.
Prepare yourself properly:
As with any task preparedness is the key to success. Before digging into that pile of white fluff stretch your muscles to prevent injuries. Also remember to wear proper layers, you might be out in the cold for quite some time and do not want to get sick.
While you’re out there make sure to take breaks, continuous snow shoveling can be very hazardous to your health especially if you are in not so good shape. Waxing you blade will also help you be more efficient, a waxed shovel blade will cause snow to easily come off the shovel when you toss it.
Stay Safe:
If not done properly shoveling snow can be hazardous to your health that’s why you should always do the following when taking on this task.
- Bend your knees and lift with your legs
- When lifting snow keep the blade close to your body to reduce back strain
- Switch sides. When shoveling try to switch off between arms so you are working different types of muscles and less likely to strain something
- Just like switching sides try to switch your grip s different muscles can be worked, (palm under vs. palm over)
- When there is an excess of snowfall do not attempt to pick it all up in one swoop instead scoop the top layer and then the lower layer. This will reduce your chances of back injury or worst going into some type of cardiac arrest.
