Despite the cliché, in reality, garages are actually one of the worst places ever for a band to practice. The acoustics are awful, trapping sound in some places while echoing them in others. The reverb of the walls makes it impossible for anyone to hear themselves play, thus making everyone sing and play louder than they would in a revue or concert hall. Not to mention that it’s the worst part of the house to play if you don’t want your neighbors to call the cops on you every time you plug in an amplifier.
Your goal should thus be to transform that space of the house that was once a garage into a legitimate rehearsal space. That entails a certain degree of careful planning, budgeting, and investing. If you really want to save yourself the trouble of renting out a practice space, slowing bleeding cash as you go, then you are going to have to bite the bullet and spend some cash making your own. If you’re a devoted musician, it will most certainly pay off in the long run.
The principle obstacle at hand here is soundproofing. That doesn’t just mean stacking egg cartons on the walls. That means tearing down and replacing the walls with soundproof concrete and sealing the corners. You should also tear up the floor and then lay some good carpet as well. And finally, you will have to destroy the roof and essentially put in a double roof.
