What Not To Store in Your Garage

Your garage is an excellent area to store things, but don’t let it get overcrowded and clustered. After you clean out your garage for dirt and debris, you should gather up all the things that you don’t need any more. You can donate those items or have a garage sale. Some things to remember are never store items that could be damaged by extreme or fluctuating temperatures, belongings that could be ruined by moisture or humidity, or hazardous materials that could damage your home.  Here is a list of items you should store in another place.

Food-Canned foods have a shorter shelf life when stored in hot garages. (The hotter the temperature, easier it is for you food to spoil). Shopping at stores like Costco and Sam’s Club can be cost-effective, but the garage is not the right place for your food. Food can also cause unwanted creatures or rodents to enter your home which I’m sure you don’t want.

Propane– Keep your grill outside near your grill and ventilated. Propane tanks can cause fires if they ignite. Set cylinders on a flat surface away from your house.

Paint-Paint can completely get ruined if they are subject to extreme temperatures. It’s definitely a better idea to store paint cans in house or in a basement.

Hazardous materials- The proper way to get rid of hazardous materials is through the HAZMAT program.

Wooden Furniture-Wooden furniture can get damaged by fluctuating temperatures. They tend to expand and fluctuate, so it’s better to store these types of items in your house or somewhere with a steady climate.

Electronics-Electronics such as DVD players, TVs, and computers can all get damaged if they are subject to extreme heat or cold.

Important documents-Important documents such as passports, birth certificates, and should never be store in a garage. Your life actually depends on these items and you don’t want to ruin them over something stupid.

Photographs-Moisture and hot temperature cause you pictures to grow mold or sick together. The best idea is to store your pictures in a closet in your house.

Delicate clothing-Delicate clothing such as high school and ARMY jackets, wedding dresses, and graduation gowns can all be damaged by heat and humidity. The ideal place for these items are in your closet.
