What You Need To Know About Your Garage’s Emergency Release Cord

When you think about what a garage door is, you probably think about how you open and close it to get in and out of your home.  Although this is true, there are so many small factors that make up a garage door.  Each piece of equipment has a specific function that you’re probably not aware of.  This is because if there’s ever a problem, you can call an expert to come and fix it.  That being said, there are some things that you should be aware of in your Clermont garage door.  One of these things include the emergency release cord.

The emergency release cord is typically a cord that hangs down from your garage door’s trolley and has a handle at the base.  This cord usually hangs a couple feet below the ceiling, meaning you may need a small stool to reach it, depending on your height.  The purpose of the emergency release cord is to disconnect the carriage from the trolley, therefore allowing the door to slide along the railing.  This allows you to lift the garage door manually.

When you do this, there are a couple of things to remember.  To start, your door should be in the down position.  If it’s not, the garage door could come crashing down if the springs aren’t functioning well.  To test your emergency release cord, try pulling it when the garage door is in the down position.  Once it’s pulled, you can manually open and then close your Clermont garage door.  Once you put it back in the down position, you’ll need to reset the cord.  It’s important to note that when the cord is disconnected, the spring lever is disconnected.

To reconnect it, you should pull the cord down and toward the door, away from the motor.  From there, you should reconnect the trolley to the opener carriage.  You can do this by sliding the door along the track until the attachment point is re-engaged.  The second way to do this is by pressing the garage door opener remote so that the opener carriage will connect the cord automatically.  Whether you do it manually or through your remote, you should hear a loud click.

It’s important to be aware of how to work your emergency release cord because it can offer you a way out of your house when there’s no electricity.  If you have any questions about your emergency release cord, give us a call at Hudson Valley Overhead Doors & Operators.
