Steps:
- Put your garage door to the closed position. Most rust occurs in the bottom panel so clean off this panel with warm water and some type of grease fighting dish washing liquid. This mixture will help remove any oil and dirt built up from the door. Once you have done this rinse off thoroughly and let dry.
- Any rusty areas should be wiped down by a cloth that has been dipped in white vinegar (don’t get fancy here people no spiced vinegar or apple cider vinegar). Afterwards scrub rusted areas with a steel wool pad. Continue to wipe these same areas with more white vinegar. Continue these steps until there is no rust only clean metal showing.
- Once done with step two sand out the rusted spots and an area of about 2 inches around. This will create the proper texture that helps primer stick to it.
- Each area should be covered with zinc-chromate primer applied by a paintbrush. The zinc chromate will help prevent further rusting in those areas. Let dry.
- Once the primer is properly dry you can paint over with a rust resistant paint. Or use a spray can if it is a spray painted door.
